Marriage and Civil Partnership

_0002_Layer 5

Stonewall fought long and hard for the introduction of civil partnerships. Since their successful introduction in 2005, same-sex couples have been able to have their relationship legally recognized in the UK and to obtain equivalent rights and responsibilities to married heterosexuals. Almost 80,000 people have already entered into civil partnerships – far exceeding the Government’s initial estimates.

We want to see civil marriage available to same-sex couples on the same basis as heterosexual marriage - available in a registry office but without a mandate on religious organizations to celebrate it.

The Government has already signalled its commitment to extend the legal form of marriage to same-sex couples within the life time of this Parliament and has pledged to begin consulting interested groups in March 2012. The Prime Minister said: ‘We’re consulting on legalising gay marriage. And to anyone who has reservations, I say this: Yes, it’s about equality, but it’s also about something else: commitment.’ In anticipation of the Government consultation, we published a draft response in July 2011.

For Lesbian & Bisexual Women

This website was developed to help you stay happy and healthy as a lesbian/bisexual woman. The website covers things like health, wellbeing and sex and hopefully answers the questions you maybe wanted to ask but were afraid to!

The Lesbisexyandhealthy website was created jointly by workers from organisations supporting lesbian/bisexual women in the region. We aimed to give women easy access to infomation around their sex life, health and relationships. If we haven’t told you something you want to know, our Directory will point you in the right direction.

There are a range of groups and organisations available to access in the North East - take full advantage of these opportunities to get support where you need it.

We worked on developing this website for over 2 years and consulted more than 250 women from all over the North East in the process. So we really hope you will enjoy it – and don’t forget to tell your friends!
